What will Tomorrow's Media Executives look like?

Introduction

With the recent news of Bob Chapek ending his shorter than expected tenure as Disney's CEO, it's prompted me to take a deeper look into how these businesses work. More specifically, I want to understand what are the type of Media Executives we've seen thus far and a prediction of who will be the most successful in the future.


The Family Business

The Murdoch family. If you haven't seen HBO's latest docuseries on Rupert Murdoch and his family, I highly recommend it. You'll notice there are more journalists than either of us can count who pitch their opinions on the family. I would disregard the salacious book titles attributed to the journalists who have spent decades following the Murdoch families every move. Instead couple it with Succession; another HBO series that is loosely based on the Murdoch family with stark similarities with the actual family drama experienced throughout the past two decades.

Whether it's News Corp, Comcast, or the glory days of the Post. Keeping the power in the family is incredibly difficult and prioritizes distractions that are unhealthy to the business. When a founding family is their own best argument to justify power within the firm, that becomes a very wobbly leg to stand on.
